Cartapesta Nativities and Angels from Italy

The Italian tradition of Cartapesta dates back to the late 1600's. By the 1800's, southern Italy was famous for this form of statuary. These wonderful pieces are comprised of hand sculpted terra cotta clay busts, arms and lower legs; handmade sheets of paper, stiffened and draped to form the clothing; sanding gesso for a porcelain like finish; hand painting, using oil paints; and hand made baskets, fruit and pottery accessories. Because of this painstaking process, production of these pieces is very limited. Be sure to click to better see the wonderful art and craft of these beautiful figures.
